Why can’t they all just get along?
There are several reasons. A common cause of reactivity or aggression toward fellow canines is under-socialization. As a left-over mechanism for survival in the wild, a dog’s genes tell them to be wary of all new things once adulthood arrives. So dogs who were not positively exposed to a wide array of other dogs during puppyhood—part of a process called socialization—often grow up to be fearful around other dogs. And unfortunately fear often leads to aggressive behavior, such as barking and lunging, in an attempt to move other dogs further away. Fortunately, under-socialized dogs can learn to be more comfortable around other dogs through positive training.
Another common cause of all the on-leash ruckus is barrier frustration. Being on leash can be frustrating and even scary. Frustrating because you can’t get to what you want: Social dogs constantly denied the chance to say hi to other dogs can begin over time to “act out” that frustration. This is often seen when on leash or behind a fence or window. Shyer dogs may experience fear when leashed around other dogs, resulting from an inability to control the distance and duration of these social interactions. Positive training can help these dogs feel more confident about seeing or being around other dogs while on leash.
Finally, some dogs just don’t like some dogs. Just as we humans don’t like every fellow human we meet over our lifetimes, it’s unrealistic to expect dogs to love all fellow canines. That said, it can be a very real problem when dogs who live under a single roof take issue with each other. Thank goodness training can help in many of these situations.
In all these endeavors, as with any training I do, I use only the most scientifically-sound, positive training methods. I want you to feel good about your results whether you choose to train with my support or have me do the training for you. And if the job is to help your dog feel more positive about other dogs, it stands to reason that punishment-based training will be counter-productive to our aims.
