Why dogs do what they do
It’s easy to attribute human motivation to dog behavior. It’s also counter-productive. Thinking about dogs in human terms leads to misguided (and very unscientific) concepts like dominance theory, and attributing notions like stubbornness, guilt, and revenge to canine behavior we don’t like. The truth is dogs are much more simple creatures than we humans, with much simpler motivations.
In short, dogs do what works for them, and avoid choices that don’t get them what they want. If barking or jumping get your attention, they’ll bark or jump more often. If they find themselves consistently ignored when engaging in these activities, they’ll give them up to try something else.
This is one of the secrets of good, easy dog training: Learning to actively reinforce dog behavior you like in order to see more of it, and making sure behavior you don’t like doesn’t work for your dog. It’s a simple concept that, used skillfully alongside actively teaching cues (like sit, stay, and come when called), helps create a beautifully-mannered canine companion.
