Why can’t my dog just chill alone?
Separation anxiety is, simply put, an anxiety disorder. Some of us panic at the thought of large crowds or public speaking. Some dogs panic when left alone. There are various theories as to the cause—not being properly socialized to alone time, having a traumatic experience while left alone, and genetic predisposition are the three most likely. But whatever reason separation anxiety has developed in your dog, the treatment is the same and there is hope.
What’s important is that it be treated. Separation anxiety doesn’t go away with time (unfortunately, it generally worsens), is very rarely addressed by adding a second dog, and while crating or using an anti-bark collar can lessen destruction and barking it won’t stop your dog’s daily, painful anxiety attacks.
Thankfully separation anxiety can be addressed through a careful, systematic desensitization to being left alone. In other words, we use positive training to help your dog feel better about being by herself—for her comfort and your peace of mind.
